Three Floors Down: Launch and Artist's Talk

Meet the Artist & Launch Event
Friday 28 November 2014 6-8pm
Free artist talk at 7pm

For Three Floors Down: In the Studio, Borough Road Gallery will be divided in two: with one half becoming a studio space for the Gallery’s first Artist in Residence, Susan Sluglett, and the other dedicated to a display of works from A David Bomberg Legacy – The Sarah Rose Collection selected by Sluglett and the Gallery. Sluglett will be based in the Gallery for three months, making new work inspired by A David Bomberg Legacy – The Sarah Rose Collection.

In the 1940s and 50s (when the University was known as Borough Polytechnic), the celebrated artist and teacher, David Bomberg, taught his legendary art classes in the life-drawing studios three floors above where Borough Road Gallery is now situated. Bomberg was passionate about the importance of art within society and about supporting artists in their careers. The aim for the residency is to continue Bomberg’s legacy by inspiring new work and supporting the development of an artist and their practice, whilst at the same time offering the opportunity to engage with, understand, and enjoy A David Bomberg Legacy – The Sarah Rose Collection in new, unexpected and creative ways. Three Floors Down continues the use of Sarah Rose’s gift as a significant resource, which not only ensures that important artworks are accessible, but also provides a vibrant starting point for a range of new work, responses and research.
